Publication protocol

The DNA extraction from blood and buccal swabs samples was done by Chelex®100 [5]. These samples were collected and extracted from 2002 to 2010 and then stored in the freezer. The DNA extraction from hair samples was performed using the Tissue & Hair Extraction Kit and DNA IQ™ System (Promega), following the manufacturer guidelines.
The quantification of nuclear DNA (ncDNA) was done using Quantifiler®Trio DNA Quantification Kit (Applied Biosystems) according to the manufacturer guidelines. The quantification of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was performed using a TaqMan® Master Mix assay (Applied Biosystems) described by Niederstätter et al. [2] using only the detection of the 283 base pair (bp) fragment. Both assays were performed in the 7500 Real Time PCR System(Applied Biosystem).
