	Human epidermal melanocytes (HEM) were obtained from Cell Applications, Inc. (San Diego, CA, USA) (Cat. No. 104K-05a), maintained in melanocyte growth medium (Cell Applications, Inc.), incubated at 37°C in a 5% CO2 humidified incubator, and expanded for at least five passages. The medium was changed twice a week and subcultured when it was about 80% confluent.

Murine B16F10 melanoma cells or B16 cells (Cell No. RCB2630) used in this study were obtained from the Riken Cell Bank (Tsukuba, Japan) and maintained in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (Nissui, Tokyo, Japan) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA), 4 mM L-glutamine (Sigma), 50 units/mL penicillin, and 50 μg/mL streptomycin (Cambrex, East Rutherford, NJ, USA) and incubated at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO2.
