Publication protocol

Genomic DNA was isolated from available blood using the QIAamp 96 DNA Blood Kit (Qiagen, Venlo, the Netherlands). Purity and integrity was confirmed using the NanoDrop 2000 Spectrophotometer (NanoDrop Technologies, Middleton, WI), the Qubit 2.0 Fluorometer (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA), and gel electrophoresis. Telomere length was measured with the quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction method, originally described by Cawthon.31 This method measures the amount of telomeric genomic DNA (T)/β‐globin single‐copy gene (S) (T/S ratio) for each participant. The mean intra‐assay variability between “T” and “S” quadruplicates used in the calculation of the T/S ratio was 1.7% (SD, 0.3%; range, 0.9%–2.6%). The interassay variability between plates was 1.7% (SD, 1.4%; range, 0.3%–6.2%).
