MDA-MB-231, SKBR3 and MCF7 cells were originally sourced from ATCC. HER2 overexpressing MCF7 cells32 (MCF7-HER2) were a kind gift from Professor Dennis Slamon, (University College Los Angeles, USA) and Dr Norma O’Donovan, (Dublin City University, Ireland). All cell lines were grown in DMEM media supplemented with 10% foetal bovine serum and 1% penicillin/ streptomycin. Media used for MCF7 cells also contained 0.01 mg/ml bovine insulin. All cell culture reagents were purchased from Labtech International (East Sussex, U.K.) and Sigma-Aldrich (Arklow, Ireland).
