Cells were grown to~90% confluence at 37 ◦C in a humidified atmosphere with 5% (v/v) CO2(g).

Commercial human carotid artery endothelial cells (HCtAEC) (Cell applications Inc, San Diego,CA, USA) were cultured in MesoEndo Cell Growth Medium (Cell applications, California, USA)containing endothelial cell growth serum (ECGS) (Millipore, Sydney, Australia). Cells were grown to~90% confluence at 37 ◦C in a humidified atmosphere with 5% (v/v) CO2(g). Each in vitro test was performed on HCtAEC sub-cultured to passage 4.
