Human coronary artery smooth muscle cells were purchased from Promocell (Heidelberg, Germany) and cultured in Smooth Muscle Growth Medium Cell-2 containing 10% supplement-mix (PromoCell, Heidelberg, Germany). Cells were incubated at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO2. At the end of this period, the medium was removed, and cells were subjected to growth arrest in medium containing 0.1% supplement-mix before each experiment. HCASMCs between passages 3-5 were used for experiments and all explants stained positive for smooth muscle cell α-actin (Sigma, USA).
